Folding the long way gives you a shape that stands out on a counter: next to a stack of ordinary letter-size handouts, a tall narrow piece looks different before anyone reads it. That suits drink and dessert menus, price lists, service or treatment lists, event programs, anything that runs as a vertical list rather than a page of paragraphs.
The catch is width. Each panel is only 4.25 in across, so you're designing four narrow columns — one idea per panel, short lines, no room for a wide image or two columns of text. What you get in return is unusual for a bi-fold: open it and you're not looking at a landscape spread but at a normal portrait page, so the inside can be laid out like a regular full-page flyer, with the crease running down the centre of it. Keep type and faces off that line and the open page behaves like any Letter layout.
In the sets: closed on the tall cover and open flat, tented and shot straight down, so you can present the slim folded piece and the full open page together. Each is a layered PSD with smart objects — the artwork sits on its own layer, so replacing it leaves the fold, lighting and shadow untouched.
