The appeal is that shift between two shapes. Closed, it keeps the considered, record-sleeve feel of a square; open, the two panels sit side by side as one long letterbox spread, so an image or a headline can run right across it the way it never could on a single square. It's a favourite for anything that wants to feel like an object — event invites, small lookbooks, menus, music and art promos, wedding stationery.
Working with it means designing for both states. The cover has to hold as a self-contained square and earn the open, while the inside is a wide format with the crease down the centre — so keep faces and key type off the fold, and let the artwork use the width rather than treating it as two square halves. It's less about cramming information than a tri-fold and more about one strong image or idea revealed in two moves.
In the sets: closed on the cover and open across the spread, standing, tented and shot flat from above, so you can present the square cover and the wide inside in one go. Each is a layered PSD with smart objects — the artwork sits on its own layer, so replacing it leaves the fold, lighting and shadow untouched.
