An ID card is a template more than a free canvas, because the content is half the point. It has to hold a name, a photo, a role, often a company logo and a barcode or QR — real, variable information that changes per person — so the design's job is a frame the details slot into cleanly, legible at a glance across a room. That's the opposite of most branding work: the layout has to leave deliberate space and still look considered, and the strongest zone is the top, since a badge sits low on the chest and the name gets read before anything below it.
Worn rather than held, it comes as a set with the lanyard and holder. The card carries the design; the lanyard is a second, narrow branding surface — a strip of printed webbing that repeats a name or pattern down its length — and the plastic holder or clip sets how it hangs. These are event and conference passes, staff and visitor badges, festival and access credentials, membership cards. Seeing the card in its holder on an actual lanyard, worn or laid out, is how you judge whether it reads at chest height and whether the card and strap look like one system.
